Black Wolf Skin Headdress by NaturePunk Black Wolf Skin Headdress by NaturePunk
The wolf whose skin was used for this piece came from an auction for the leftover stock of an out-of-business fur company.
It is a large wolf, over 73" long from nose to tail tip, and was professionally garment tanned. He has some of the softest, most luxurious fur of any canid I've worked with yet. The guard hairs on his back are VERY thick and silky, and the underfur is dense and warm to the touch. The guard hairs are an impressive 7" long!

The final product will have red-and-white pheasant feathers on it and the underside of the pelt will be lined with a dark red recycled felt fabric.

The photograph was taken by my boyfriend, whose additional work can be viewed here: [link]

I made this as a commission for a friend of mine. You can view the listing on Etsy here: [link]

This particular one was over $1,000.00 but that's because it was a very good pelt to start with. Others I've made have been as low as $370.00.

When i found out that the Native Americans used wolf head dresses an coyote head dressed for hunting that was pretty cool, I have a large wolf book with 400 pages of photographs myths an stories it said the natives where amazed by the wolves great hunting skills when they dressed up as wolves it was easier to hunt, I love this picture its almost like you are the wolf :D When i see the headdress i dont see your human anymore :) its really beautiful.

Thank you! And yes, I've seen the old lithographs of the buffalo hunts, in which Native Americans are wearing wolf headdresses to scare their prey. It's amazing how they did that.

For me, being able to work with wolf parts as I do is a real gift, and I often wear the headdresses out into the woods on some nights just for the heck of it. It's liberating - just like skinny-dipping or hiking barefoot. It brings me closer to the natural world. I would do it more often, but I worry that I'll run into a hapless jogger and scare them to death some time. :D :D :D

LOL that would be slightly funny but not to the jogger, if that happened they might think you where a werewolf or something unless they carry flash lights well duh chelsea im sure they would XD. Ive never gone skinny dipping but i have hiked barefoot it hurt but was still fun, Well im happy you have the gift to do that an take pictures cause i love seeing the pics :)

Thank you! I live in a different part of the state now, and the territory isn't quite the same as it was further North in the Pacific Coastal Rainforest. The people here are used to seeing unusual things, since Ashland is a theater town, full of unusual characters. If I saw a werewolf in the forest here, I'd probably just think, "Well, it was only a matter of time!" :D :D :D

Well, it's not uncommon to see people walking around in the streets wearing fairy wings and crazy costumes all year 'round. Seeing a girl in a wolf headdress wouldn't be too strange for most Ashlanders. :D

Fairy wings and crazy costumes, hmmm I WANT TO LIVE THERE, lol sounds like my kinda place, :D gosh if people wore that here they would only last about a half a day before getting gang jumped or what ever else can be worse then that,

It's a pretty laid-back kinda place. Portland is verymuch like that, as well, even though it's a big city. Most of Oregon is a pretty fantastic place when it comes to that sort of thing!

I really enjoy making these. I'm currently working on an African lioneses myself. Will be posting pics of her for sure! And I would LOVE to see a white yote headdress! :D

wow! a lioness sounds crazy! cant wait to see that. i might try to mount the face of the white coyote. i hydrated it to straighten the snout, pop out the nose and uncurl the ears. im going to test a piece to see if itll hold up to being hydrated again.

I have a a gray-and-white wolf currently listed on Etsy as well for just $470.00. If you provide the hide, I can also make a similar headdress for between $50.00 to $70.00.
