Celestial Coyotes: Synesthesia

Description

I have synesthesia. My brain is wired wrong in my head, so when I see a letter, it also tells me that I see a color in conjunction to this letter. It happens for numbers, sounds, music, and personalities, among other things. Sometimes I see color for smells, too.

I also had a pack of coyotes living in the greenspace behind my house in PDX. There was a series of nine nights in a row, during which time I found myself surrounded by coyotes that guided me through the streets of the city so I could get back home. On each of those nights, I awoke to find that real yotes had congregated outside to sing aloud at O-dark-thirty in the morning.

So in honor of these furry little rascals, I did a synesthesia painting based on the duet I'd heard in my yard after one such dream.

Normally, the coyotes I heard incorporates a lot of yips and barks into their songs, but these two didn't really seem too interested in anything but the wavering long-winded howl they're so famous for.

The lime green is the beginning of the howl which widens and swirls as it drops to blue. There's an edge to their howls as well (which, like wolf howls, looks white to me).

The yips and barks which they did throw in at the end of their little serenade were yellow and slightly orange....and very sharp. So I made them into trees to make things a little less literal.

The coyotes themselves are red, orange, yellow, and white. Historically, they are a 'warm' animal and are often represented by fire per many Native American stories and folktales. In some, they are credited as being the animal which brought light into the world.

I used a lot of fire in this one (by means of a high-powered propane torch), which is how I got a lot of the swirling design in the sky. The coyotes were hand-drawn on paper, then covered in encaustic, then layered onto the background at the end.

Possibly my favorite encaustic piece I've done yet.

Was for sale on Etsy, but was purchased by my boyfriend in exchange for a fancy dinner date at my favorite fondue joint.

I can almost hear them coyotes when looking at this. During some nights I hear their calls from outside - where I live is near a forested valley, that is also a reserve because of the wildlife that resides here. There is something in their barking and yipping and their howls; a sense of unusual pride, as they are not the best howlers around in comparison to wolves... but, they sound like very spirited creatures as from what I hear during those night :)
