Massive African lion canine tooth measuring 5 1/4" over the outside curve. This was obviously from a very large lion, and is quite old. Purchased from a friend on Taxi.net who owed me a favor, so I got it (along with some lion claws) at a very reasonable price. Even so, teeth like this are hard to come by, and it will be priced accordingly.

Since the above images were taken, I've filled the cracks in the tooth with Apoxie to prevent them from getting bigger with wear. I'm still not sure what I'll do with it, as I fancy the idea of having it set in silver for a pendant, but this may be one of those rare instances where a tooth is just TOO big.

You have a taxidermy.net account right? I can't register.. it keeps asking me those questions like, "What color is snow?" Well.. now I am confused, when you registered did it ask those questions? Awesome tooth by the way. ;)

That is a masive tooth. The lion must have been very old and lucky hunter. I dont know what you did with it in the end but i wouldn't have done any thing with it and left it in its true natural form to apreciate it more. its to perfect to spoil. I'd like to know what you did do with it in the end however.

I sold it as-is to a friend of mine. I believe that she's kept it in its natural state, though I'm not certain.

Do large cat teeth have pulp cavities similar to other mammals? I am aware walrus teeth are solid, but I have not had any experience with this type of ivory and I am considering using it as a new medium

It depends on the age of the cat. Older cats will have completely solid teeth, whereas younger ones will have a cavity in the root end where the nerve ending is found.

I do think it is too large for a necklace, you don't want it to border on ridiculous ;) Maybe it should simply be displayed as it is.

Or carved just a little bit, with the pattern disappearing as it reaches the narrow part, that would be a great thing to see! I'm not sure I'd like the natural beauty "ruined" tho.
