Kia Up Close

Description

Kia the Amur leopard, caught in mid-turn, paces in her enclosure before feeding time.

I was laying on the concrete floor in front of her while shooting this and was not exactly comfortable with the intense look in her eyes. :D
She weighs over 120 pounds, but can lift twice her own weight, taking down prey as large as domestic cattle and as fierce as wild boar.

It amazes me how disrespectful tourists at the zoo can be sometimes.
If I had a dollar for every time I heard someone call her a cheetah, I would, quite literally, be rich.

It also amazes me how disrespectful people can be toward teenage photographers. One woman, who apparently didn't know I could hear her, was saying to her husband "Why do people spend so much time and money taking photos of these animals? What're they ever going to do with them all?"
I turned to her and said simply, "This camera and these photos are paying for part of my college education."

Used a 55mm lens (focal Length: 31mm); flash was fired.

I didn't bother to mesure how close I was to Kia when I took this, but but I'd estimate a little under a foot away.

If that lady said that to me, I'd just glare at her and say, "What, do you expect us to be crackheads of the future?" I'm 16 and is a teenage photographer, along with my friend. Photographers like us see differently than people who are not photographers, especially teenage photographers
