My Little Paco

Description

Paco has had quite the adventure. He came to the Oregon Humane Society with a group of kittens which were rescued from a pet hoarder, and was pretty skinny when he arrived. He also had a kitty cold and wasn't too playful at first, but as soon as he came back to health, his personality blossomed.

I walked into the cattery at the local shelter with my friend Arin. As soon as we'd stepped inside, Paco was the first cat to climb out from his hiding place to see what was going on. He romped around and played with me, while the other kitties slept in their padded beds. A beautiful calico Siamese and two Russian blues with piercing yellow eyes, plus a black-and-white tuxedo cat were the others available, but none of them seemed too interested in interacting with us. Paco was perfect.

I filled out the paperwork, got the supplies I needed, and Arin and I headed back to my Attic. Paco slept on my lap during the drive home, and once he was let loose into his new house, he was bounding around from wall to wall, nonstop, until Eagle called me to ask if I was still down to hang out that night. I told him about Paco, and explained that I didn't want to leave him. So instead, I brought the new kitty with me by tucking him into my sweatshirt and taking the bus back into town. He cozied up close to me and watched the world go by.

I crashed over at Eagle's place that night, and Paco slept with me under the covers. He likes to be close, with his body pressed against mine. I suppose it's because he grew up surrounded by so many other cats. Now it's just us, and I'm his only constant companion.

I took the bus back home today, with Paco still concealed within my sweatshirt. As circumstance would have it, I missed the 44 back to St. Johns, so I ended up with some time to kill in downtown Portland. Headed over to the pizza place and ordered a plate of hummas for dinner, then sat down at the corner by the window. Paco was dead asleep.

It had been a perfect day so far. But when the waiter arrived, he brought with him the wrong order, and gave me cheese-filled bread sticks with marinara sauce instead. I pointed it out and he said, "It's okay. If you want, you can eat this, and I'll get you the hummas to go." As he said it, he looked pointedly at the bulge beneath my sweatshirt that was Paco, and I realized that my waiter apparently thought I was pregnant. But if it meant free food, I wasn't about to complain, nor did I want to get kicked out the restaurant for having a cat with me.

So after dinner, I caught the bus back home, and sat across from a cute younger guy with a notebook in hand. He was doodling a bit, but seemed rather uninspired. I was going to say something to him, but Paco poked his head out my sweatshirt just then and looked around curiously.

The boy across from me looked up, and his eyes went wide. "I had no idea you had a cat in there!" he exclaimed. I shushed him, trying not to draw much attention to myself, since animals were not allowed on the bus. But I laughed and joked about the kitty being my own personal space heater.

When the bus came to my stop, the boy with the sketchbook got off too. He looked a little embarrassed as he said, "I got a little too into my drawing, so I kind of missed my stop. You should have this," and handed me a drawing he'd done of Paco asleep in my jacket. We ended up walking together for a few blocks before we went our separate ways.

Back at the Attic, Paco danced around the house a bit before lending a rather unhelpful paw in the re-painting of my downstairs bathroom. My homeowners and I shared a few drinks and a fatty bowl before we all retired to bed.

Paco is fast asleep on my wolf pelt on the bed. I'm about ready to call it a night myself.
