What Kind of Leopard is This?

Description

Been lookin for a legal pre-ban leopard skin for a long time now, and so despite the fact that this one set me back $450.00, I'm quite pleased. The only problem I have now is that I do not know the exact subspecies of leopard this pelt came from. The guy I got it from inherited it from his great-grandfather who did a lot of travel, but had no idea where exactly it originates from.

My first guess was Amur leopard, but looking into various subspecies, I now believe that it may be Indochinese. Oddly, it has some spots inside the central rosettes like a jaguar would, but the facial build and fur texture most certainly point to leopard. I have seen this happen with Amur and Indochinese leopards, but never African or Persian leopards. The other subspecies are hard to find good photos of, and even then, it's hard to tell.

Unfortunately, this low-res photo was the only one I had to go by, so until it actually reaches me, I won't be able to photograph any of the extreme details.

Feel free to use this for reference and whatnot. Would probably be great to look at in case you were planning to get a realistic leopard print tattoo since most African leopards I've seen in reference don't have markings quite this nice.

SIDE NOTE:
Please note that this leopard pre-dates the CITES ban on exotic cat skins. It is antique and would have been stored in a dank attic for another 40 years if I hadn't bought it. I believe that by doing so, I have been given the opportunity to respect the animal this skin came from in a very profound way. It will be treated with respect and honor.

UPDATE: The old image has now been replaced with a much better, high-res image.

I'd say probably north Chinese but it is difficult to tell with just the pelt.
